When you get a new Chihuahua one of the most important and first things to be done is to get your new puppy a collar. Make sure that the new collar won't slip over their head, but that it is also comfortable around your dog's neck. It is not a good idea to purchase a collar that is a couple sizes too big, for example, thinking that the pup will grow into it. Oversized collars have a risk of catching on something causing your dog to choke.
When considering a new collar, nylon or a flat leather collar should be the type you check out first. These can often be found with fun styles or, frequently in the case of leather collars,
spiked dog collars. Most collars come with a D ring or a buckle of some kind that can be attached to a leash. Some modern nylon collars come with plastic clips similar to those found on fanny packs.
While a Chihuahua is unlikely to grow much all that fast, it is still recommended that you check the fit of the collar weekly to be able to replace it the moment it begins to feel too tight. It is advisable to get a couple of the cheaper collars as a puppy will often go through 3 or 4 before reaching mature size.
Of course a collar is not just a fashion accessory, a lead will maximize its use. The best leads are made of leather or nylon and are roughly 5 or 6 feet long. Many leads are available with a self winding system, ensuring that your dog won't get tripped up by the lead. Make sure these leads are of sufficient strength and come with a push button stop, especially when you're taking your dog through crowded areas.
While many dog owners use lengths of chain for leads and/or collars, this is not at all advisable with a dog as small as a Chi. Even the training choke collars are really not recommended for dogs as delicate as Chihuahuas. Following these simple guidelines will ensure that you and your Chi have many a pleasant adventure together.
